An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Humber and Yorkshire Coast Bowel Cancer Screening Centre for an experienced nurse to join our growing bowel cancer screening team. As part of the specialist team providing bowel cancer screening, you will have a key role in the assessment, care and support of individuals participating within the Humber and Yorkshire Coast Area.

The screening centre has expanded to deliver the bowel scope screening programme. This programme is in addition to the existing bowel cancer screening programme which has been available for 13 years and is aimed at people 60 - 74 years old.

You will be involved in assessing participant’s fitness for bowel cancer screening. You will assist in the complex decision-making processes ensuring a safe journey through their screening episode. You will act as the participants’ advocate, supporting and empowering them to make informed decisions about their screening episode, to ensure they receive a quality service that would encourage them to participate in the future. You will have to deal with sensitive issues including anxiety regarding the outcome of their episode in clinic and cancer diagnosis post investigation.

The role involves the delivery of clinics within the Humber and Yorkshire Coast Area: the area covers Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Scarborough therefore the willingness to travel, have a driving licence and a car is essential. You will be present at colonoscopy and bowel scope lists within the relevant departments to support the participants and collect data. You will attend colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team meetings (MDT’s) within the participating individuals’ relevant Trust. You will help with developing  the bowel scope screening programme. You will be involved in health promotional activities to encourage access and participation within bowel cancer screening, interact with Public Health England and CCG’s. You will be expected to contribute (via local governance frameworks) to the development and quality assurance of the screening programme.

We are looking to recruit to a full time post based at Castle Hill Hospital, working mainly in the north bank covering Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire and Scarborough. However the post-holder will be required to work within any part of the Humber and Yorkshire Coast Area depending upon needs of the service. You will also be required to work flexibly to cover the working day; this may involve evening and weekend work.

We welcome RN’s who have been registered for at least five years and have experience and specialist knowledge to work within the bowel cancer screening programme. You will be expected to undertake and pass the specialist bowel cancer screening practitioner course which may involve travelling and overnight stays. You will also have to undertake a 2 day IT training course which may involve an overnight stay. There will be structured support and induction to help develop you into this role.
