An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within a high volume, high quality Vascular service. This is a replacement post complementing the eight full time and one part time existing surgeons and seven vascular interventional radiologists. The department enjoys an excellent working relationship between surgical and endovascular consultants and has a very strong track history in education, training and research. There are excellent opportunities for practice development and experienced mentors are at hand. This post will be on a one year locum basis with a view to becoming substantive by mutual agreement.
The Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust has an annual budget of circa £561 million, employs over 8,000 staff and serves an extended population of 1.2 million. It is a designated Vascular, Major Trauma, Cancer and Cardiac Centre.
Our central population includes Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire with spokes in North Lincolnshire and Goole. We typically offer quaternary services to York and North Yorkshire. Overall our population is ranked as above average for deprivation and ill health. The prevalence of vascular disease and diabetes is above the levels seen across the UK population and the prevalence of diabetes has doubled in the last 10 years.
Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire is a fantastic place to live and work and has recently been named amongst the best places to live in the UK. Hull was the 2017 UK Capital of Culture with an ongoing legacy of city wide events as well as excellent museums, galleries and the new bonus arena events venue. The city offers the both the cobbled streets and architecture of the old town or the buzz of the newly rejuvenated waterfront. The Marina and old fruit market offer numerus cafes and bars, winning accolades including both the UK Great Street Award and being named in the UKs top 10 hippest places by Travelsupermarket.
The service is currently establishing a service development plan, with a view to significant expansion of staff and facilities to meet the growing needs of our population. The department offers a full Vascular and Endovascular Service 24 hours per day. The scope of practice includes all aspects of Vascular and Endovascular, including level 4 work and has been designated as a Vascular centre from 2012. There is also a comprehensive and high volume renal access practice in place. Sub-specialisation in an area of interest will be supported where professionally and clinically appropriate.
The Department of Vascular Surgery is a regional service based at Hull Royal Infirmary. The Department has a 30 bedded inpatient ward with rehabilitation facilities. There is a dedicated open surgical theatre with planned emergency sessions in a second theatre and emergency availability in a further two to three theatres when required. The service currently has 16 inpatient surgical operating sessions and 4 day surgery sessions supported by regular outpatient clinics and minor surgical outpatient facilities. Urgent cases are managed through a “hot clinic” service and are usually seen within 72 hours if required. There is a three room interventional radiology suite, including one hybrid suite and there are plans for a further hybrid suite in Vascular Surgical theatres. The department has a vascular laboratory offering duplex ultrasound and exercise physiology including CPEX with access to treadmill, conventional and hand bikes.
We have a team of 5 Academic Vascular Specialist Nurses who support the extensive research portfolio in the department and provide nurse led clinics for venous ulcers, small AAA and intermittent claudication.
There are specialist clinics in renal access surgery, diabetic foot disease and minimally invasive venous surgery. The department holds spoke clinics in Beverley, Driffield, Grimsby, Pocklington and Scunthorpe. There are weekly general vascular MDT meetings and a weekly specialist aortic intervention MDT meeting.
The East Yorkshire and Humber AAA Screening programme, part of the National Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme, is based at Hull Royal Infirmary and has been in operation since January 2011. The programme provides screening for all men in their 65th year from the Humberside, East Yorkshire, North & North East Lincolnshire areas. From April 2012 the screening population was extended to incorporate the North Yorkshire, York and Selby localities.
The Academic Vascular Surgical Unit is an active research and teaching department integrally involved with the Hull York Medical School at all year levels. The research capability includes The Professor of Surgery and two Senior Lecturers, and the academic specialist nurse team with project management and full admin research support. The new Allum Building on the HRI site includes expansion research space (clinical rooms and Office areas) for this prosperous academic unit to support the development of new research programmes and collaborations. There are a wide range of trials active at any one time and a successful candidate would be expected to support successful recruitment to research programmes.
