Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is looking to appoint 3 Consultant Histopathologists to join our friendly and committed Consultant team of 11 within the Department of Cellular Pathology.

The post holder will provide and develop further with the team a comprehensive clinical and laboratory service for the Trust to nationally accredited standards of the United Kingdom Accreditation Service.

Applicants are expected to have or develop a subspecialist interest in more than one area. All areas of expertise will be considered depending on the interests of the applicant. Urological, gastro-intestinal, breast, renal, skin and respiratory pathology are the subspecialist areas of greatest need although additional support would also be helpful in gynaecological pathology.

The cellular pathology laboratory (histology, cytology and neuropathology) is situated at the Hull Royal Infirmary in a purpose-built facility. A state-of-the-art public mortuary was completed on the Hull Royal Infirmary site in 2008. A team of Consultants carry out both Coroner’s work (not part of this NHS contract) and request autopsies. There is an opportunity for the new appointee to join the team.

The department operates a subspecialist system of reporting serviced by teams of consultants. The Royal College Workload matrix is utilised as a guide to enable an equitable distribution of work and for use as a tool for medical workforce planning. Flexible working for part of contracted hours is under evaluation. The department is in the process of implementing digital pathology.

Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust provides a comprehensive range of acute services from two hospital sites. It serves a population of approximately 1.2 million. With an annual budget of over £481 million and employing approximately 8,000 staff the trust is committed to the continuous development of services for the benefit of patients and to providing a comprehensive service of the highest possible quality.

Already a vibrant and dynamic city, Hull has been The City of Culture since 2017. Hull’s vision is to be one of the UK’s top ten destinations for shopping, art, sport, leisure and most importantly, living. A huge amount has already been spent on creating new shopping centres, waterfront living spaces, art studios, office complexes and visitor attractions such as the Kingston Communications Stadium and The Deep – the world’s only submarium. Better still, within the next 5 years the city will have seen over £250 million in investment.

The region also boasts a diverse coastline ranging from award-winning sandy beaches to dramatic cliffs. Inland you’ll find mile upon mile of green, unspoilt countryside and woodland that are perfect for walking, cycling or horse riding. And if you like exploring, there are endless historic towns and picture postcard villages within a short driving distance from Hull. Right now, housing is plentiful, varied and affordable, too and there is a fantastic selection of high-quality schools to choose from.
