Hull University Teaching Hospitals Trust and Kingston upon Hull City Council operate a joint mortuary service providing mortuary and post-mortem facilities for the county of East Yorkshire. The service is currently run across two sites at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital.

The mortuary & bereavement service team continually strives to provide excellent patient care and we are looking for a dynamic, highly motivated, enthusiastic team leader / supervisor to join our team. You will be experienced in all areas of mortuary work and be dedicated to the continual development of staff and service improvement - including the development of the Medical Examiners system and a CT post Mortem service.

The Mortuary Service undertakes up to 1200 Post mortems per annum including post mortems for other coronial districts when required.

Other activities include – Tissue donations, research harvests, and forensic post mortems. The mortuary operations across both sites are managed via a computerised system.

The Mortuary is fully licenced by the HTA and holds UKAs accreditation.

The post holder is responsible for assisting in the delivery of day to day operation of the service. The supervisor ensures the efficient and effective use of both staff and other resources. This includes the planning and organising of work rota and liaising with the police, Scientific Aids Department; Coroner’s Office and the pathologist. The post holder is expected to deputise for the Service Manager / Deputy Manager as and when required and will be expected to perform departmental audits and risk assessments.

The post holder will be expected to perform and supervise a wide range of technical/scientific procedures to aid pathologists/clinicians diagnose a cause of death, identify outstanding clinical issues and identify the effects of treatment. This work is undertaken in the post-mortem rooms including the Category III area. The nature of the work is both variable and unpredictable and the post holder must be prepared to work both flexibly and under pressure. The supervisor is also responsible for the effective and safe operation of the post-mortem rooms and operations associated with Regional Forensic Centre status.

The post holder will be expected to uphold the professional standards required by the Academy for Health Care Science Council and the Department of Health and provide evidence of Continued Professional Development (CPD). They must also have experience of the compliance with standards as required by the Human Tissue Authority (HTA), The united Kingdom Accreditation Services (UKAS), and other relevant professional and legislative bodies.

In addition the post holder will also be involved in the training and development of staff, particularly trainees and will provide technical advice to other users of the mortuary facilities including other mortuary staff, the Coroner, police, funeral profession and bereaved families.

The post holder will also be required to undertake adult post mortem consents and also assist with the paediatric consent process when required

The post holder is expected to discharge technical duties either working alone or as part of a small team and will help to ensure a 24-hour mortuary service is maintained via an on-call system. This will involve working unsociable hours.

The Post holder must hold both the certificate and Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology or minimal Level 3 / Level 4 diploma and be able to demonstrate   experience of working at a senior level within the mortuary.
